LIFE IN THE AVOCADO ROWS

There’s something grounding about stepping onto the avocado farm every morning. The moment our boots hit the soil, we’re greeted by that familiar mix of earthy scent, soft birdsong, and the gentle rustle of leaves as the trees wake up to the sun. Frequent visits to the farm have become more than routine — they’re a daily reset button, a reminder of patience, growth, and the quiet beauty of nature.

The first task is always observation. Avocado trees speak in subtle ways: a shift in leaf colour, a new flush of growth, or a hint of dryness in the soil. Walking slowly between the rows, we check the young fruits, still small and firm, hiding beneath the shade of glossy green leaves. Some branches seem to be bursting with promise, others look like they could use a bit of encouragement. Every tree has a personality — some generous, some stubborn, but all alive with potential.

Mid-morning is usually about tending. Sometimes it’s irrigation, making sure the trees have enough water to thrive in the heat. Other days it’s pruning, clearing out dead branches to allow sunlight to reach the growing fruit. These little tasks, repeated day after day, are what turn a farm visit into a conversation with the land. You give it attention, and slowly, it rewards you back.

And of course, there’s the wildlife — the bees hovering around avocado blossoms, tiny lizards darting across warm stones, and the occasional bird perched proudly on a branch like it owns the farm. They’re part of the rhythm now, familiar companions on each visit.

By late afternoon, we often stand at a high point on the farm, just taking in the view. The rows of trees stretch out like green waves, swaying gently as if whispering secrets of good harvests ahead.

Frequent visits have taught us that farming isn’t just about production; it’s about connection — to the land, to growth, to patience, and to the quiet joy of watching something thrive under your care.

Every day may look similar, but no two visits are ever the same. And that’s the beauty of it.
